“When you’re in London, can you please get me some hair cream. The best comes from Geo Trumper on Curzon Street” – these were the words of the famous writer, Tennessee Williams, written in a letter to a friend. And being a real gentleman, Tennessee Williams knew as well as anyone what to choose. The name Trumper means as much to Englishmen of different ages as Churchill or Wilde and the reason for this admiration is rooted in the history of the Geo. F. Trumper Company. In the middle of the 19th century, George Trumper opened a small hairdresser’s at 8, Curzon Street in the centre of London. Here he personally prepared perfumes, toilet waters and hair pomades for his clients. Soon, his hairdressing salon became known at the royal court, and Trumper began creating named perfumes for highly placed personages like the Duke of Marlborough and the Duke of Wellington. Today, Trumper’s cosmetics and perfumes are still made by hand, frequently with the use of the same technology devised by Trumper himself. Particularly worthy of attention are his before, during and after shave cosmetics for men. These are creams containing various scents from almond to sandalwood; a special shaving soap, the formula for which is based on essential oils; a variety of eau de colognes; and nutritious gels and lotions. Small badger-hair brushes, razors and razor stands, and special leather toilet-cases designed for travelling are all essential accessories for the real gentleman, even if he is not a native Englishman. |
