SAVINELLI CHRISTMAS PIPE NATALE: 2004

Zoom
In the years after the Second World War, there was a real pipe boom in Italy. Cheap pipes made from briar, of which there was an abundance growing in the region, were accessible even to the impoverished population, but they were not of particularly good quality. At the time, the Savinelli family were already well known among pipe smokers: their tobacco shop in the centre of Milan went back to the 19th century, and even in the hard years their range of products was on a high level. But that, apparently, was not enough. Achille Savinelli Jr., a very young man at the time, decided that he would change the image of the Italian pipe in the eyes of the world - a challenge at which he proved to be eminently successful. He gathered together the finest master craftsmen and began producing briar pipes with the Savinelli brand name, which he sold in the family shop. By the 1960s, the Savinelli Company had become one of the main exporters of quality Italian pipes, and in the 1970s, they began to produce a limited edition of luxury class pipes. Today, the company is headed by Achille’s son, Giancarlo, who is continuing the pipe-making tradition begun by his father. Each year, alongside its usual output, Savinelli creates a few pipes in very limited editions. For Christmas 2004 the company produced 27 Savinelli Natale 2004 collection sets. Each set comprises a briar pipe, the bowl of which is hand-cut and decorated with a gold ring, and two mouthpieces of black and amber Lucite.   Car of the year
