Humidor of the Year DUNHILL NORMANDY BRIDGE |

In July 2004, Alfred Dunhill Ltd. launched a line of Normandy Bridge humidors. Up till then not even inveterate aficionados could imagine that the ordinary humidor could become the subject for a flight of engineering fantasy. And although throughout the course of its practically century-long existence, the Dunhill Company has been famed for manufacturing all kinds of technical luxuries, the Normandy Bridge humidor is an article that shows originality in the highest degree. Judge for yourselves. In designing the humidor, attention was paid to the construction principle of the Bridge, which crosses the Orne Canal in Normandy and where the load-bearing leaves pivot on a fixed axis on each side. Inspired by the mechanism of the bridge, the designers at Dunhill decided to make use of the construction on a humidor – hence its name. The humidor consists of three smallish cedar trays, each of which is fitted with two devices for controlling humidity. This makes it possible to store various types of cigar in such a way that they will not affect each other’s aromatic qualities. The trays are connected from top to bottom by means of fixed axels made of rhodium. When the lower tray is pulled out, the other two open automatically. But how exactly the embodiment of these heights of engineering fantasy will turn out in real life, will only be learned by a few, since only fifty of these humidors have been made. |
