Experts and amateur automotive enthusiasts alike assert that that the Japanese luxury 4x4, the Lexus RX 400 H, has opened a new page in modern automobile construction. Although hybrids (cars with petrol engines working in tandem with electric motors) have been produced for several years now, in the minds of the majority of consumers this type of construction is associated with small, inexpensive cars that are primarily designed for urban use. But the Lexus RX 400 H breaks the mould. It is a spacious, four-wheel-drive car, equipped with a 3.3 litre, 233hp petrol engine and two electric motors: one driving the front wheels; the other the rear. The total power of the engine amounts to 270hp. The car, which can reach 100kph in less than 8 seconds, is amazingly economical, and its average fuel consumption of 8.5 litres per 100km is phenomenal for a car of this class. This means that on a full tank, the car can drive 1000km! Also, the Lexus has the lowest pollutant substances emission rate of all the 4x4s, and comes well within the Euro IV ecological norms. In many respects the Lexus RX 400 H is a pioneer motor vehicle, an example of what a car should be like in the 21st century. |
